Amyuni PDF Converter & Family Tree Maker Trouble

Post by carriemacnz »

I am using Family Tree Maker (FTM) Version 16 (the “latest” version to date) on my computer. Since upgrading to this version of FTM a few months ago, each time I open the program, it is slow and a “restore point” is added into System Restore which reads:

“Printer Driver Amyuni Document Converter 2.10 Installed”

Because I often open and close this program several times a day, my System Restore is “cluttered” with these points! This happens only when opening FTM (not with any other programs). Exactly how can I get this to stop?

The Family Tree Maker people (Genealogy.com) are of no help. I don’t think they understand what’s going on any better than I do! They suggested that I find the Install.exe file and double click on it to install the Amyuni Document Converter, after being sure that other printers are not using LPT1 printer port. Doing that did not help, but this note (below) was left:
________________________________________________________

I don’t believe that I need or want the driver that seems to be “embedded” with FTM, but how can I get it out and how do I make this continuous “restore point” creation stop happening every time I open FTM???

I have the following printers installed:

Adobe PDF (Driver: Adode PDF Converter)
Intuit Internal Printer (Driver: Amyuni PDF Converter 2.07)
Quicken PDF Printer (Driver: Amyuni PDF Converter 2.50)
hp photosmart 1315 series
CAPTURE FAX BVRP

I am running Windows XP.
I know that someone else has asked this particular question, but I don’t think it was answered… or at least the answer is not clear.

Thank you for your help.

Restore points

Post by Joan »

Restore points are created when the printer driver is not digitally signed. Starting version 2.51, the Amyuni PDF printer is signed and XP will not create restore points.

What seems to be happening with FTM is that it is creating a new printer each time you run it, and deleting the printer once it is closed.

You have various solutions at this point:
- Disable restore points from "My Computer-->Properties-->System Restore."
- When FTM installs the printer, right-click on the printer in the printers panel, go to security and uncheck the "Manage printers" permission for all users. This will prevent FTM from removing the printer and reinstalling it. Note that you need to be an Administrator and have the rights to manage printers to do this operation.
- Purchase the full version of PDF Converter with a $20 discount by visiting www.amyuni.com/developer. This will have the additional benefit of enabling you to print to PDF from any application installed on your system.

Hope this helps...
