OEM installs - printer defaults to Amyuni PDF for new users

Post by roaphi »

Version 3.03
Windows 7/Vista

We are experiencing difficulties installing the driver with our application in Audit mode, as demanded by various OEMs. This is typically on a clean PC with only the default MS XPS driver present.

When installation of the PDF driver is complete (using Amyuni's install.exe), the default printer switches from the Microsoft XPS driver to our PDF driver. This is undesirable since only our app can utilize the PDF driver. We have made our application installation switch the default back to the XPS driver but have now realized that the fix is only good for the current user.

During OOBE a new user account is created and the default printer is once more our PDF driver. We understand that we can "fix" this in our installation routine (with difficulty) by loading NTUSER.DAT from \users\default and changing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Device to "Microsoft XPS Document Writer,winspool,Ne00:"

This strikes us as problematic in that it is not a documented procedure (as far as we can tell) and may be language dependent. Surely there must be a simpler way. Also, shouldn't install.exe itself take care of these issues.

Does anyone have any experience of these problems? We would be very grateful for any advice and comments.
