PDF Printer Driver version conflicts

Post by dbailey »

Our software installs Amyuni Document Converter (PDF print driver) v4.0.0.7 and we have developer license key which is sent at print time to activate the driver.

One of our users has another piece of software which has installed Amyuni Document Converter (PDF print driver) v4.0.1.0.

After that install the printer we installed says it's version 4.0.1.0. When attempting to print to our PDF printer we receive the -30 Printer Not Activated message.

We have uninstalled the other piece of software and removed all cdintf*.dll files that show a version no. of v4.0.1.0,restarted the machine, and confirmed there are no cdintf*.dll with a version of 4.0.1.0.

We then uninstalled and re-installed our printer using the Amyuni installer but it still says it's v4.0.1.0?

Where is it getting this version number from? and is there a safe way of having different versions of the amyuni driver active on the same machine at the same time?

The problem was there were another two dlls with v4.0.1.0 sitting in the folder "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86" and the folder "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3" (For 64-bit os use "x64" instead of "W32X86").

The DLLs were:
acpdfui400.dll
acpdf400.dll

So I did the following:
1) Remove any printers configured to use Amyuni Document Converter 400.
2) Stopped and disabled the spooler service.
3) Deleted the above DLLs from the folders mentioned above.
4) Set the spooler service back to "Automatic" and restarted it.
5) Re-installed the printer (I used the Add Printer wizard, selected "Have disk" and navigated to the Amyuni.inf)

Problem solved... until the next time the dll's get updated by another piece of software.

So the question is how can we have side-by-side installs of different versions?

Side-by-side installations is possible except for version 4.0.0.7. There was an unfortunate bug in this version and the CDINTF.DLL file that ships with this release cannot enable future or prior version 4 releases. So basically 4.0.0.7 DLL HAS to be replaced when doing side-by-side v4 installations.

In general, to make sure the right ActiveX control is being used, you can follow the instructions in this post:
