Transparent Image elements

Greetings. I'm looking for advice related to preparing Image objects that include transparency, so they can be layered on top of others with alpha channel preserved.

I'm working on a digital pre-press app that composites dynamic element sets into a PDF tailored to the Kodak NexPress, and preserving transparency is key.
